It actually depends what output you want to see in the total row. If its just the previous row, then INDEX is the right choice and if you want show Total of the values present, then OFFSET solves the purpose.

And if nothing in the total row, then you can anytime wrap the result with HASONEVALUE/ISINCOPE.
